Alexa Mobile · Discovery research
Three people, one blind spot.
Before any information architecture got drawn, I sat down with the people actually pulling from the guide day to day — an engineer, a mobile designer, and a multimodal designer. Same guide, three different jobs to be done — and all three were fighting the same fragmented, org-shaped structure. These conversations are what the consolidated information architecture was designed to answer.

Meet Gavin
SDE · Alexa Mobile Home
Gavin is an SDE working within Alexa Mobile Home. He uses the Alexa Mobile design guide to coordinate component information and to build mobile experiences.
As a developer for the Alexa app, I generally use the design site to reference redlines and code samples when developing features. Currently, the information is buried at the bottom of the page for each component and is difficult to find without having used the site before.

Meet Michelle
UX Designer · Alexa Mobile
Michelle is a UX designer working within the Alexa Mobile app. She's very familiar with the Alexa design guides and how designers actually approach them.
I'm a little concerned about putting all of the components from different platforms together. I approach a design problem from the perspective of how someone would use this site — if they have a specific platform they want to design for, that's the lens I'd want to design this from.

Meet Sarah
UX Designer · Device & Services Design
Sarah is a UX designer within the Device & Services Design group. She worked on the foundational building blocks that align the multimodal experiences across the Alexa ecosystem.
One centralized location for the building blocks needed to build an experience is ideal. Experience makers aren't often designing just for multimodal, or just for the Alexa app — they want to build something that uses all the platforms Alexa has to offer.
Read together, the pattern was clear: an engineer wanted findable spec detail, a mobile designer wanted a platform-specific lens, and a multimodal designer wanted one shared set of building blocks — three different needs, all blocked by the same org-shaped structure. That gap is what the "how might we" below was written to close.
Concept 1
How might we create a single source of truth for the Alexa mobile design guide?
